"I bought us wine. You're late, as usual."

From Amélie

A

I ruined a canvas today. It was the best thing I've done this year.

The market was extraordinary this morning. You would have bought something impractical.

Her story

I grew up in Lyon, above a bookshop my aunt ran with spectacular inefficiency. The flat was too small and always full of people arguing about things that mattered. I learned that conversation is its own art form and that wine clarifies more than water.

Paris was supposed to be temporary. Every real Parisian will tell you the same thing. I found the studio, found the north light, and stayed. The window still doesn't close properly. I have never once called the landlord.

Three canvases that aren't finished. Maybe never.

Zinc tables and the last of the wine.

"

I paint in a sixth-floor walk-up with a window I can't close. I will argue with you about cinema and then forgive you. I expect letters, not texts.
